Recent races: St. George Marathon, Olympic Trials Marathon, Moab 5 miler.

Short-Term Running Goals:

I want to run faster. I'd like to win a race or two. I want to smarter and harder and increase my mileage without increasing my injuries.

I'd also like to keep up with this and my other blog. You can check it out at novicexpert.blogspot.com. I don't keep track of my workouts there (just random thoughts on running), so the two don't really interfere.

Long-Term Running Goals:

I want to win at least one marathon, make a better showing at the next Olympic Trials, try a few ultra-marathons and finish a 100-miler.

Personal:

I lead a simple life. I teach a couple of times a week and run. A lot. I also climb and ski (both snow and water) whenever I get a chance.  I think I'm addicted to sunshine.

Yucky air! Couldn't really see the mountains on the far side of the valley yesterday.  Not supposed to storm til Thursday. May not clear up 'til Sunday.

 More this pm.

so i had this plan. 1m warm up, 4m hard (6:27, :24,  21, :18) then 2m easy then 4 m hard (same paces but increase the elevation with each mile. I wanted to test my new asthma treatment against hills--already works with speed. and since it's nasty outside, this was my option).  anyway, i warmed up and did 6:27, :21, :18, :15) then did 2m easy and during my first hard mile of the second round my achilleges started burning worse. i'd felt it a little before but not much. so....i stopped. i could have pushed thorugh the workout but decided that in the long run, three more hard miles wouldn't be worth the risk of another injury. lately it seems i'm a walking injury--though not bad a bit perpetual. frustrating. sorry it's a bit depressing to read this. it's also depressing to write it too (blarg!) anywho--one of these days my achilles will recover fully and I will run run run.

good thing i'd been planning on only pool work tomorrow anyway (the treadmill seems to be hard on my body so i wanted to give it a break for a day).

I heard you do pool running? I have a nagging pain in my leg I have been dealing with for 2 months now and I am considering taking a month off to see if I can get it to go away. I don't want to loose too much on the running end but I also want to run pain free. So, I just wanted to see if you would share your advice with me.

yes, i've done too much pool running these past few months. i'm ready to get out, but oh, the air...

at any rate, i recommend using a running belt or some other floatation device so you can concentrate on your form, not keeping your head above water. just make sure to run with as normal a stride as possible. heel strike and pushing off your toes (to keep your calf muscles and ankles in use).

the hard part is mentally staying with it. much easier to slow down in the water when you're not paying attn. i happen to run in a pool where i can run laps around the perimeter. I have run in lanes but that's not as much fun. anyway, i do intervals. three laps, four laps, whatever.

Thanks!! So you don't run in place? You actually run yourself around the pool?

It's always a fine line between improvement and injury rist, esp. when you are running such high mileage. Nice job, though.

HI, I have a nagging achilles, and just holding it off, so depressing though isnt getting any better!

I have access to a pool that I can run laps around without a belt, as its all one level, only thing is, how do you equate the mileage etc do you actually equate it the same as I am touching the ground easily, water comes to just below bottom rib cage, so I have to wear a sports bra! thanks sam

jon- thanks for the encouragement

sam-um, i've only done deep water running so i don't know how hitting the bottom of the pool changes things. seems to slow down rotation/stride when i've accidentally gone too shallow (when i'm in a pool running laps or whatnot instead of the pool at USU). i calculate by time and effort. 8 minutes of the same effort that an 8 min mile would require equals one mile.
