Recent races: St. George Marathon, Olympic Trials Marathon, Moab 5 miler.

Short-Term Running Goals:

I want to run faster. I'd like to win a race or two. I want to smarter and harder and increase my mileage without increasing my injuries.

I'd also like to keep up with this and my other blog. You can check it out at novicexpert.blogspot.com. I don't keep track of my workouts there (just random thoughts on running), so the two don't really interfere.

Long-Term Running Goals:

I want to win at least one marathon, make a better showing at the next Olympic Trials, try a few ultra-marathons and finish a 100-miler.

Personal:

I lead a simple life. I teach a couple of times a week and run. A lot. I also climb and ski (both snow and water) whenever I get a chance.  I think I'm addicted to sunshine.

i'm clean. showered and ready for the end of the race. i pulled out at 13.2 (maybe. maybe 13.15). my achilles had been burning for miles. it started at about 6 or 7 and then went away and then again at 9 or 10 and then was persistant after about 11. i'd thought i'd go til 15 but just felt right about stopping. it almost felt like it was spasming (is that a verb? or spelled in asomewhat recognizable form?).  anyway, i felt fine as far as the running went. started out much faster than i meant. must have been the downhill pull. i was in 2nd place. the whole race and was within eye contact of the girl in first. maybe 200-400m in front, depending on when in the race. some miles i pulled closer to her, some she pulled away from me.

i had definitely slowed down and was running 6:40-50-ish pace without too much effort. i'm sure i would have finished well. but i am just uninterested in spending my summer in the pool (the indoor pool).  i like running too much for that. i like the sun too much for that. i like my body too much for that.  yeah, $500 woulda been cool (yes, i an english teach just wrote "woulda"--it's summer, i can do what i want. including use commas incorrectly. find the comma splice all you grammarians out there...ha. ok anyway. lame post running-non-humor).

yes,l i am sad and embarassed about pulling out. but with the wasatch back next week and the burning and spasming of myright achilles (almost into my calf), i just...stopped. i think i'll go to the gym later and either bike a little to loosen up or use the elliptical. whichever feels better. oh, and lift light stuff and do core. after all, i only ran 13 today.

Bummer. So was that UV marathon you dropped?

Sounds like a smart move. Sorry your achilles started spasoming (I think its a word). You do lots of longish runs, do your achilles often burn or did this catch you off guard?

yes, it was the UV marathon

and no, i wasn't expecting the pain. i have a history w/ achilles tendonitis, which is why i stopped. it's taken me out a day or two occassionally this year, three-and-a-half months winter before last and two months two years before that. i didn't want a repeat. i prefer running on land.

Sorry about the DNF, but the long term focus is more important than just one race and a bit of $. That race was more difficult than I expected it to be (as it seems did lots of folks).

Recovery to run fast another race!

Good luck at Wasatch Back!

I didn't even know you where planning on running this. Sorry it didn't go as planned. Have you ever tried Aystm for the tendonitis? It always works wonders on mine.
