Short-Term Running Goals:

I want to run faster. I'd like to win a race or two. I want to smarter and harder and increase my mileage without increasing my injuries.

I'd also like to keep up with this and my other blog. You can check it out at novicexpert.blogspot.com. I don't keep track of my workouts there (just random thoughts on running), so the two don't really interfere.

Long-Term Running Goals:

I want to win at least one marathon, make a better showing at the next Olympic Trials, try a few ultra-marathons and finish a 100-miler.

Personal:

I lead a simple life. I teach a couple of times a week and run. A lot. I also climb and ski (both snow and water) whenever I get a chance.  I think I'm addicted to sunshine.

So here are my excuses. I'll get them over with and confess the real problem: I ran 16 miles yesterday. I stayed up until 3:30. It's the end of an 80 mile week....I was just didn't run smart. "Stay behind her for about 3 miles and then fly past her," Cody told me as we warmed up. I had patience to run about a stride behind her (or less) for a bit over a mile and then flet like she was slowing down, so I gradually passed her and put some distance but she cause me a  little before mile 4. My legs, I'll be  honest, were tired. I finished 20 seconds or so behind her at a pace that's definitely not my best, but it wasn't bad for having run 16 miles yesterday.

I ran a few easy miles to cool down and discovered that indeed my legs are tired.  But, I enjoyed my run yesterday and the race was not terrible. Fall is still hanging in there (hopes of a little canyon running this next week). Yes, yes, life is grand.

Hey, nothing wrong with training through a race. You'll have more important races for freshening up your legs for. Nice job.

You are nuts! I couldn't run 16 miles the day before and run that well! Good job!

I like the littany of excuses followed by the real one. Nothing wrong with training through a race, though, like Paul said. Plus 85 miles this week? Are you going to maintain this mileage all winter, or do you go into a bit of hibernation mode?

Nice to meet you today. I didn't realize you were such a speadster or that you took 2nd today and came that close to winning. They sound like good excuses to me. Great race.

Thank you,Nice to meet you to.

Yeah, about the mileage. i'm gonna try to keep it up there as much as i can...but, the way i train (or am trying to anyway) is to build for three weeks, rest (ish) for one. same sort of idea as pushing just a little harder than straight alteration of hard/easy days.

I am still in awe of the mileage you are cranking out as base for next year. You ran well considering it all. Keep up the good work!

Still a great workout, on top of lots of mileage and training. It's fun to watch your training. When's your next target race?

I'm not sure what my next marathon is. Know of any good late winter or spring races?

From MichelleL on Wed, Nov 05, 2008 at 22:08:58

Here's the races I considered: Houston marathon, PF Chang marathon, Houston 1/2, and PF Chang half. I did the Painter's Half last year in St George in mid January. It is a nice flatish course, but I was the winner by 5 minutes. I wanted to find a race where I would definitely not win but perhaps win money. I didn't choose the Houston 1/2 because that's the championships and I'm not ready to post a time I consider good enough for that elite of an arena. Perhaps 2010? I chose PF Chang over Houston because it is closer, so there is less travel time, and the money runs 10 deep (Houston is 5 deep if I understand correctly), so perhaps I can recoup my travel money. It's relatively flat so its a good option for the OTQ quest.
