Recent races: St. George Marathon, Olympic Trials Marathon, Moab 5 miler.

Short-Term Running Goals:

I want to run faster. I'd like to win a race or two. I want to smarter and harder and increase my mileage without increasing my injuries.

I'd also like to keep up with this and my other blog. You can check it out at novicexpert.blogspot.com. I don't keep track of my workouts there (just random thoughts on running), so the two don't really interfere.

Long-Term Running Goals:

I want to win at least one marathon, make a better showing at the next Olympic Trials, try a few ultra-marathons and finish a 100-miler.

Personal:

I lead a simple life. I teach a couple of times a week and run. A lot. I also climb and ski (both snow and water) whenever I get a chance.  I think I'm addicted to sunshine.

I wish this thing had a box for "medium"-paced miles. I do too many medium miles. Had a number of those today.

Intervals today. Nice long warm-up and cool down with five 1-mile repeats. I would have done more but I didn't have the time. I did the repeats on a canal road by my parents' house in South Jordan. Run out a mile, then back. I was caged in by busy streets at either end, so back and forth I went. Kept passing the same people walking their dogs. I think one lady was a bit perturbed because she had to put her dog on the leash  instead of let it run free.

I must admit that I was a bit disappointed in myself. I was trying to run hard and push against the wind and breathe through the wheezing and get a good workout, but I just wasn't tired enough when I finished my last interval and had to head home.

It doesn't happen very often: I felt like running on a treadmill. It was even nice outside; I was quite perplexed at the notion because I generally dread running in place or in a pool. But, I decided to go with the whim because I have an inability to run easy on a treadmill and felt like I haven't been working hard enough lately, so I hopped on there and pushed the increase speed button a few times. 'Twas a grand run.

I ran with people today! First time in....hmmm, do I count a little jaunt around the "block" with roommates? I had a good time. Easy trail run. I only biffed it once (sorry I disobeyed the decree of no falling on the way down).  We ran into a few hunters who asked where our guns were. I pointed at my bicepsl, but no one noticed, which was a good thing since like many runners, I don't have superfluous arm muscles.

It's funny, the amount of nothing that can take place during a 12 mile trail run (say that 27 times fast. Twelve mile trail run, twelve mile trail run. Ok, maybe not). Anywho, I had a thoroughly enjoyable time listening for shots, chatting about races, being jealous that I was a bit behind on the way down and didn't get to see the deer, almost dropping to the ground when we startled a few birds wo then startled us and wondering how that Range Rover got high-centered on the edge of the road without rolling off and tumbling down the cliff.

At any rate, I'm new to this blog, but I think I'll like it. Maybe not as much as I like running but it's blogging isn't the only thing that's lower on my list.

Good run today. 2 mile warm up. 4 hard (about 6 min pace), 2 easy (with 4x30sec hard just for fun), 4 hard (6-6:30-ish, i think), 2.25 cool down (w/ 4.30sec hard for good measure).

I bought a watch this morning. Lost my last one in the summer of 2006 (I think it feel out of my bag as I was rowing a little boat around a lake in Versaille. Either that or a French pick pocket picked my watch instead of money). It's been a little while since I've caged my left wrist with a time-keeping device and I didn't like it much at first, though I did find it useful in monitoring my pace and timing out 30 second intervals for me. Though I must admit the reason I waited so long to buy another watch...(no, it's not because I'm cheap). I find that I get really negative if I think I'm running slower than I should be. I've been able to plead ignorance for a long time, but I thought I should take some responsibility for my own training and keep track of myself, and today I did. Well, for half the time. I stopped the watch a half mile into my second tempo because although I was on pace, I was afraid that I wouldn't be in a while and that it would be too much to handle both the mental struggle with time and the burning in my legs as I pushed through the tempo.

Maybe next tempo run  I can make time my friend.

Glad I invested in more pepper spray. Had to spray the same dog twice. One of my roommates thinks I'm cruel to run with pepper spray and use it, but she's not been bitten, nor chased as much as I have. I feel bad to admit it, but I hate dogs when I'm running (or biking). Love 'em otherwise, but people should either chain or train their pets. I passed an Australian shepherd (I think) that just lay there watching me run.  There are other dogs I have come to "trust" too, but those who come out and chase and bark, and curl their lips back in anticipation of biting me deserve to be maced. (call me mean, but I just don't want to take time off to recover from a dog bite).

But, today's run was ok. warm up, long tempo, cool down. I think I'm not eating right because I'm just tired in the middle of my runs when I shouldn't be. Not running tired but tired tired like I've used up all my reserves.

You sound exactly like James. I have never had any problems with dogs or other animals except when I run with him. But he has had more dog encounters, plus badgers, cats, cows, etc, than anyone I know. He is an expert at drilling dogs in the head with golf ball sized rocks.

From Scott Zincone on Thu, Oct 30, 2008 at 00:20:31

I agree whole heartedly with your thinking on dogs. Love them when I am not running, hate them when I am running..and when they are chasing me.

From lisap on Thu, Oct 30, 2008 at 19:39:41

I agree, rocks work well sometimes, but I've found myself in bad situations without rocks. I like dogs just fine, when they leave me alone, but man...they scare me.

Lovely morning run with people with a nice brisk wind coming out of the canyon. Met both Paul and Ruthie and look forward to logging a few miles here and there with them. Ruthie and I saw a few deer, but I think the boys (Cody, Paul and Joe) missed them.

This afternoon was warm and gorgeous. I took a rejuvenating run up the Logan River Trail and wandered into the haiku that I promised Paul.

Yeah, I know. Two easy days in a row. Lazy, lazy girl. I was headed out on my warm up before a ten mile tempo, legs felt ready and such, and suddenly I had a desire to run in the First Dam 10k (or maybe 5k) tomorrow. So I took it easy and ran up Smithfield Canyon, rather ran in Smithfield Canyon because there's almost no "up" (or down for that matter).

Anyway, it was a lovely run, still felt like fall--with bright yellow leaves still on the trees. I turned a corner and a breeze stole leaves from a not-yet-barren tree and they didn't dance or rain or float down but swirled and let the wind carry them, much like the bit of downhill was carrying me down the canyon.  Okay, that was cheesy, I'll admit it but it was a perfect running day. Overcast so I didn't have to wake up early, quiet road lined with trees. 'Twas lovely.

So here are my excuses. I'll get them over with and confess the real problem: I ran 16 miles yesterday. I stayed up until 3:30. It's the end of an 80 mile week....I was just didn't run smart. "Stay behind her for about 3 miles and then fly past her," Cody told me as we warmed up. I had patience to run about a stride behind her (or less) for a bit over a mile and then flet like she was slowing down, so I gradually passed her and put some distance but she cause me a  little before mile 4. My legs, I'll be  honest, were tired. I finished 20 seconds or so behind her at a pace that's definitely not my best, but it wasn't bad for having run 16 miles yesterday.

I ran a few easy miles to cool down and discovered that indeed my legs are tired.  But, I enjoyed my run yesterday and the race was not terrible. Fall is still hanging in there (hopes of a little canyon running this next week). Yes, yes, life is grand.

From lisap on Sun, Nov 02, 2008 at 02:56:40

Yeah, about the mileage. i'm gonna try to keep it up there as much as i can...but, the way i train (or am trying to anyway) is to build for three weeks, rest (ish) for one. same sort of idea as pushing just a little harder than straight alteration of hard/easy days.

From cody on Sun, Nov 02, 2008 at 11:07:15

I'm not sure what my next marathon is. Know of any good late winter or spring races?

From MichelleL on Wed, Nov 05, 2008 at 22:08:58

Here's the races I considered: Houston marathon, PF Chang marathon, Houston 1/2, and PF Chang half. I did the Painter's Half last year in St George in mid January. It is a nice flatish course, but I was the winner by 5 minutes. I wanted to find a race where I would definitely not win but perhaps win money. I didn't choose the Houston 1/2 because that's the championships and I'm not ready to post a time I consider good enough for that elite of an arena. Perhaps 2010? I chose PF Chang over Houston because it is closer, so there is less travel time, and the money runs 10 deep (Houston is 5 deep if I understand correctly), so perhaps I can recoup my travel money. It's relatively flat so its a good option for the OTQ quest.

I love sundays and no running is one of the many reasons. All I can say is that my body needs that bit of break. I plan on high mileage this week again (and a "recovery" week to follow), so I think my muscles are thanking me for this. I hope the rain doesn't put a damper on my roommate's and my weekly sunday afternoon walk. Maybe it'll be shorter (not the hours of wandering we did last week) but I think we'll go.

Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance

Good run today. Three mile warm up, ten mile tempo, three mile cool down. I wasn't as tired as I expected to be given my mileage the past couple of weeks, which is encouraging since I'd like to keep the  mileage high (yes, with scheduled "rest" weeks of lower mileage).

The thing I've found curious lately is my asthma. I must not have trained very hard in the past few months because I never really noticed it. I could run hills and be fine, but recently and especially today it gave me trouble. I think I need to go back to my dr because she gave me the prescription I like on the condition that I not use it more than once or twice a week. I used to never use the stuff (as I seemingly never ran hard), but I'd like to use it more. I didn't today (hence the trouble breathing up a few hills). Yes, must make note to see her again when I'm in Salt Lake. Pooh Pooh on breathing.

I need to call my allergist/asthma dr. I headed out to 34th north (35th?)...whatever is at the end of 16th east and turns back west. Interval/hill day. Planned on a few 800m repeats and mile repeats and 400s...Attack in my first interval. Tighter and more serious than just the normal wheezing.  so I stopped to breath at the top rather than just turning around and "resting" on the way down. Caught my breath (it waited for me, how nice) after a few seconds and decided to try it again. To no avail, so I thought I'd run home and eat lunch and then run a tempo later and again tomorrow to make up for my laziness today. Ended up running farther and faster than I meant, so I had a shorter tempo (6.5 miles) but I didn't want too many miles, seeing that it will be three days in a row of 16.

But this afternoon's run was good. The uphill kicked my trash a little but I hit my stride a couple of miles in and then kicked the run's trash (would that be the opposite of it kicking mine? Because whatever the opposite is, I accomplished). Good hard run. Good effort. I needed that.

Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance
10.004.0014.00

Ok, the 4 fast miles weren't terribly fast, but they were faster than I meant to go. I met up with a friend who I'd never run with. Most can't really give me much of a workout (except they guys on this blog, of course)...and I don't say that to brag, it's just true. Most roommates and buddies just don't run as much as I do. But apparently Patrick runs daily or almost every day, and he runs trails. So, we ran up the trail on the north side of Logan canyon and down the the river trail. We "ran" through a little tunnel (I couldn't run very well in there because not only were we hunched over, Patrick was blocking the little bit of light at the end, so I couldn't see a thing). We also ran on top of a pipe (my favorite part). I must say that I'm impressed. He kept his pace up the whole time, like I said, that doesn't often happen with the friends that I've run with. But, it was exactly what I needed to run the sore out of my legs. My earlier, easier run didn't help with that much (may have made it worse, in fact).

On the drive home I saw Cody and Jon (? were you two running together this evening?) decked out in their reflective vests, jogging along the sidewalk on 8th east. I wanted to honk or yell or something, but they never would have seen me. Twas too dark.

re: the whole fat-people-sucking thing. Well, honestly I'd take that comment off or at least amend it at this point if I could figure out how to edit that part of my profile! People in America are actually socializing each other to get fatter, and they especially don't tolerate skinny people. Even "normal weight" people don't tolerate healthfully slim people, but try to socialize them into gaining weight. I'm not saying that fat people are inherently worse people than other people, just that being fat and tolerating it, and not doing anything about it, and not encouraging one's overweight friends (to do what they should for their own health and society as well, since fatness is a social disease) is a psychiatric disease of it's own, that's all.

Went on a walk with my roommate as I do every sunday. We were wandering around North Logan and saw a sign for the North Logan Cemetery.  Neither of us had heard of it before so we thought we'd check it out...perfect cloudy day for exploring an old, creepy cemetery. No, no. Don't think you'll find any haunted corners or weeping statues or glowing grave stones. It was dedicated less than two months ago. A quiet, pleasant patch of grass with one lonely grave and an open view of the valley. We sat on the bench for a few minutes, until a truck came into view and we thought it was family members of this one person, so we left. But the truck just pulled around the cemetery, probably hoping the road went through somewhere (where to that far east, i don't know). i'm just glad no one got out of the car just then. I don't know why, we weren't disrespectful but contemplative. I guess, it's just the thought of being seen at an stranger's grave...I dunno.

Medium miles. Medium pace, I guess. Just a good "base" run.  My right knee was bugging me a bit, so I finished a mile or mile and a half early (out and back run. took a short cut home).

i think I'm getting used to winter--or the idea of it. I'm such a summer person that I have a hard time transitioning to colder weather, but I think I'm coming out of my funk. Yeah! I have to keep myself in check against the winter doldrums and tendencies toward laziness. Running, usually at least, helps with that, so long as I can wake my mind up enough to just let myself run.

Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance

I did my ladder intervals in the pool this morning. So...no it's not the same as road running but sometimes my body just needs a break from the pounding. I like to run intervals in the pool because I can actually concentrate on running hard for the shorter times (that and it passes the time faster. I tell you what if the US government really wanted to torture people...) Anywho, twas a good run. One of the ROTC programs came in and seemed like they were going to do lots of drills. They had fake guns they had to try to keep dry and everything, but they didn't even stick around for half my workout (and the well...i don't know what kind of leader he was but the guy in charge was talking most of the time). I enjoyed the workout.

I'll probably get out for a few more miles this afternoon.

Ran again this afternoon (6 miles medium--comfortable but not completely slacking pace). I didn't mean to run that far, to put that many miles in today, but I just couldn't help it.  Seems pointless to run just a couple of miles at a time when I'm striving for a couple of hours of running each day. Mostly, though, I just enjoyed my little jaunt around the Island. Ran over to that park/nature preserve (or whatnot) on 1st south and about 7th east. Hadn't been there in a while. It was a useful run for stretching my legs out a bit so I can run tempo tomorrow.

Was it a pool treadmill or with a bouyant belt?

From Cheryl on Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 13:52:36

Yes, could you describe the workout in more detail? I like to do pool running and am looking for ways to make it more effective. How long are the intervals/rests? How long was the workout all together? Thanks for the info!

From lisap on Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 15:56:15

Bouyant belt. I've never run in a pool treadmill.

I agree that it's hard to get a good workout in a pool lap lane (too many turns). The pool I ran in today is different in that I run laps around the "dive tank"--a square deeper end adjacent to part of the lap pool (not as long as the lap pool). So I do the intervals based on the time it takes me to run a lap.

I've been told that running in the pool gives your the closest workout to actual running--as far as cross-training goes (i.e. closer than biking or swimming obviously, since you're using the same muscles in the same manner). I've also been told it's a 1:1 ratio in terms of time and effort. So, 7 min of pool running at a 7 min/mile effort equals a mile (or thereabouts).

Back to my workout. I ran 1 lap, 1.5, 2, 3, 4,4,3,2,1.5,1. So the intervals range from about a half mile (maybe a little less) to roughly 1.5, depending on how hard I run.

In regular lap pools where I am running back and forth instead of laps, I tend to figure out the equivalent. So...3 times down and back equals a half mile or whatever (I have no idea, actually)...then I make an interval session based on the distance and time. Kind of vague (sorry) but it works for me.

From Cheryl on Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 19:54:50

Thanks for that info. I just wanted to clarify one thing--are you always at the deep end of the pool where your feet do not touch the bottom? I'm asking because at the pool where I go the lap lane is only about four feet deep, so you would run it just like regular running, only with the water resistance. So do you do deep water running exclusively or do you sometimes run in shallower water?

From lisap on Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 20:20:25

deep water exclusively. can be tricky to find the right pool sometimes.

From Cheryl on Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 20:22:35

Thanks again for all the information. That was very helpful.

From Jon on Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 21:31:37

Cody and I have both done deep water running. Intervals are the only way to go- it's too hard to maintain high effort, otherwise.

Started out slow and bummed that I didn't feel like running hard. I am really having a hard time pushing it in all this cloudy weather. Ran "up" Smithfield Canyon. Decided to push it harder on the way home. Good run back. Quite enjoyable (found out I can run hard without the sun).

Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance

Ah...the sun came out today. Made my "recovery" run quite lovely....nice and easy.

But the harder miles were also satisfying. I ran on the treadmill today because I wanted a good hard run (third day in a row with some sort of 'hard-ish' workout). 8 mile-temp.

here are speed breakdowns as far as I can remember:

0-.5-      6:35

.5-1.0-   6:31,6:27

1-1.5     6:22

1.5-2     6:15  (faster song that i love so i sped up)

2-3.5     6:22

3.5- 6.5 6:18

6.5- 7    6:16

7-7.25     6:11

7.25-7.5  6:07

7.5        6:00

7.5-8 went up a notch each .10

felt good!

Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance

I went out on what should have been an easy 17 but i got sleep in the middle and just couldn't bear it. Decided to split my miles into two runs (i know that's not preferable, but i just didn't care). So, I ran 9.5 and will finish up later this afternoon. ahhh. the sun the sun.

My afternoon run was chillier but better and not so sluggish. Burrrrrr.

I am a strong advocate of doubles for easy days. You get in the miles, the body recovers, everyone is happy. Now, workout days are another story, but easy days, yep, doubles are the way to go.

so some of the miles were faster, some were slower but we figured it was a pretty god pace. near 8 min avg for trail running.

Met Cody and Jon at first dam and ran about 5(ish) up the river trail. Chilly chilly chilly running up the canyon to the trail. joe and paul met up with us when we got back and we took the boneville shoreline trail to green canyon. however we did not take the final mile of single track to the top despite the fact that paul and i had never run it. never run it, you say? are we sure? have we seen the nice bathroom at the top? what about that camp ground they got rid of? oh, oh and the tree....nope. nope. pretty sure i missed that. oh, except i do remember the tree. (jon kept asking if we'd been there, checking to make sure we'd never seen the bathroom or campground. cody joined in with a great description of a tree that i'm sure i've seen somewhere. maybe not, but we had a good time. nice to run with the guys again.

Yes you have great talent! I know of you but cant think if Ive actually come up and talked too you. You know my first race I did was the Freedom run up there about 5 years ago. It was awesome. I really like Logan area and try to hook up with you locals when Im up there.

You need to get a photo on your blog so everyone can recognize you. It helps but I understand if you dont, my wife wont let me put hers on. So whats your next goal race?

From lisap on Fri, Dec 05, 2008 at 18:12:11

i don't know what i'm racing next. maybe the painter's half. registered for the moab half and the dam to dam run (5 miles?) in st george. i'm cheap so i often just run what my dad plans on doing himself because then he'll pay for it.

i'd like a marathon in early may (yes, i know boston...end of april). my family is going to spain in the middle of may so i don't want to be sore and stiff still but i also don't want to be craving more miles than i'll be able to get.

so...if you have suggestions, let me know. i prefer not to race on sundays (which really limits things). i guess for now i'm training for training's sake. my high school coach instilled preparation in me all those years ago. we'd start the cross country season the week after state track. summer mileage goal of 500 miles (650 senior year). seemed like so much back then. i get that in less than 2 months now. crazy how things change.

From walter on Fri, Dec 05, 2008 at 20:32:52

Lisa thats funny how you use your dad to get into races. Keep milking that for all its worth! Hopefully he wont read this right? lol So are you running Boston next year because I am signed up and am now nervous for the length of time ive been off from a surgery I had right after St. George. I did Boston last year and Ogden right after and I did Boston as hard as I could and took it easy for Ogden and I ended up running 4 minutes faster in Ogden. Go figure right? Next year Im going to take it easy in Boston and try to slam Ogden. I took 10th overall at Ogden and 300 and something at Boston. Crazy huh? So competitive! Ogden is in may and its great. Have you done that one?

Did you run SGM this year, because your '07 time would have won it for you! I was with the Womens leader for about 17 miles last year and was amazed at how fast she took off at mile 20. You have alot of potential as Im sure your aware. Keep it up. I think being on here will help you out alot. It has helped me be more proactive. Id be happy to give you advice on whatever you felt in need of. You have Paul Peterson up there and Cody Draper and Jon Allen who know and have alot of experiance. Im amazed when I run with them how savvy they are! Now get your photo on here! lol See ya later. Cheers

my legs were TIRED today. tired like they haven't been in a long time...like i lifted wieghts recently (ha ha) or ran a lot of miles (strange that it would affect me now. i always run lots of miles)...so i started easy on a warm up and without realizing it started running hard/fast. i really wanted to stop because it wasn't time to start running fast (still just barely into my run), but i knew that if i slowed down, i chanced my not wanting to work hard at all.

part way through the run i realized i needed to gauge how far i could run. i needed to be back to go to my sister's house and didn't start at my normal beginning place so i really didn't know how far i'd gone (hard to know on a canal road. later i mapped it out on mapmyrun.com). i checked my watch and thought about how much time i'd need to get back to my car from where the canal road intersected a main thoroughfare, then tried to divide the remaining time in half. i don't think so well when i'm working hard physically. the first, second, and maybe even third time i calculated it didn't seem right. i don't know what i was thinking, but logic was not it. i'm much more creative when running than logic (what does that say about the sport...hmmmm. may prove something about the rest of the world thinking runners are nuts--i.e. illogical).

ok, back to the run. once i'd decided on the time i'd turn around, i was a bit dis-heartened. i was tired tired still but trying to run hard. i decided to extend my cooldown about a half mile so i could stop working that much sooner, but on my way  back up the canal road the more determined part of me (perhaps less logical when feeling the leg burn) decided to can the extra cool down and i pushed harder in that last half mile. felt good.

all in all, good day. may try for a few mroe easy miles to stretch my legs and run out that burn. (run to recover...ah, the logic of it all).

Is that 1 hour and 50 minutes in the pool ? I was only in for 40 minutes today and was wrinkled as a 100 year old person.

Do you use a "belt" ? I use one for the buoyancy so I can concentrate on my running form versus just trying too float. I really extend my stride and lift my knees higher than I can on the road. Any tips for pool running from your experience would be greatly appreciated.

And as another blogger told me long ago. If God had meant for us to run in the pool he would not have invented the doggy paddle.

From lisap on Fri, Dec 12, 2008 at 00:24:08

yeah an hour and 50 min. that's as long as it was open in the morning.

yeah, i wear a belt. i just try to have as normal a stride as possible, including foot stride (try to pretend to 'push off" so you don't lose calf strength. i lost all strentgh in my calves after a three month stint in the pool last winter. and don't lean too far forward. i've done that a bit. you go faster but don't work as hard for it.

my thoughts on pool running: if the US government really wanted to torture people, they'd put them in a pool and have them run for hours. Then they'd put giant clocks all over so the poor souls in the pool can see time NOT passing. (i don't put my contacts in for pool running. that way i can't see much. it helps to some extent)

From Jon on Fri, Dec 12, 2008 at 09:11:00

Yeah, those big clocks are torture. You spend forever doing a pool interval, look at the clock, and find only 30 seconds have passed. Or maybe 20.

holy cow you are putting in the miles!

From lisap on Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 20:39:30

helps that i don't have much to do since we're done with school for the semester. and that i'm mildly obsessive

From walter on Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 20:49:39

Just mildly huh? Welcome to runners anonymous! My name is Walter Brown! (Hi Walter)

From Jon on Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 23:26:53

**mildly** obsessive?

From lisap on Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 00:01:13

are you questioning my sanity? Or self control (at the very least?) I could stop running if I wanted. IF i wanted. I swear I could.

From walter on Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 00:30:09

Both Lisa! lol jk we all have a cross to bare. haha You could stop running no doubt about it. But for how long?

From lisap on Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 10:20:32

I, I, I, I could do it however long I wanted. I swear I could give it up. It, it's just that I don't want to. See, I give it up once a week, every week, to keep my control. See, see, I AM in control. Ha!

From walter on Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 10:25:36

Like I said before welcome to runners anonymous. The first step is Denial. It aint just a river in Egypt Lisa! lol Lets get you the help you need. Next time im up in Logan, which should be next week, Ill get an intervention going with Jon, Cody and Paul. lol

From Jon on Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 10:29:17

Is this going to be like the last episode of "The Office", where we drag Lisa kicking and screaming into a rehab center?

From walter on Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 10:33:22

No Jon, it'll be one of those party invitations but everyone there is going to do the Intervention. "Lisa, your a runnerholic" lol We all are, we have to control ourselves.

From lisap on Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 10:40:34

yeah, but then wouldn't you be trying to help me give it up? isn't that the purpose of intervention? why would you do such a cruel thing???

From walter on Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 10:42:04

To help our chances of getting one spot faster. lol Im kiddin' Lisa! We wouldnt dare take that away from you!

From lisap on Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 10:57:50

Ha! I knew there was an ulterior motive. How do you sleep at night?

From walter on Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 11:02:00

on my bed and large pillow? why? ha ha You have to accept my bluntness. Im really an easy go lucky guy.

From lisap on Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 11:22:03

Well, I am always serious and have a hard time with bluntness. Please, take everything I say at face value. I'm never, no never ever joking.

From walter on Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 11:32:00

Thats why your so good! I think if I could've got Jon to talk and laugh in the TOU half marathon, he wouldnt have kicked my butt so badly. He was all business that day!

I get into trouble when I joke too much. ;)

From lisap on Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 15:10:43

pardon the long pause in our ever-so-fabulout conversation. it'd been too long without the drug so i went running.

From walter on Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 15:34:19

That is tooo funny! We are a hopeless cause. If my doc knew I was up to 20 mile weeks, she'd crap! I think she meant more like 5 mile weeks for me. oh well.

From lisap on Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 15:42:23

whatcha injure this time around?

non-runners just don't understand the appeal of a good hard run (nor that you can call a 16 miler easy).

From Jon on Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 15:56:37

Walter, I wouldn't have kicked your butt so badly if you hadn't stopped for the port-o-potty...

From walter on Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 16:17:42

Lisa, im just getting back to running from a double hernia operation.

Jon, I dont know, you were pretty focused! Every time I made a push, id look up and you countered.

From lisap on Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 18:59:16

hmmmm...who to side with here? jon, i think you're underestimating yourself. i remember that first day running with you guys. wasn't cody ecstatic that he'd beaten you (because you were injured)? though i am amazed that it was walter who stopped for the port-o-potty and not you.

From walter on Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 19:02:11

Yeah he went a couple of times on his 30 miler race he ran this year and still Won the race! Can you picture that? lol

From Jon on Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 19:23:21

Hey, watch it now...

tom, i know, i know. too many intervals. but i'm still in the pool! i haven't evolved into a full-time land runner again (though I am partially running on land again). i guess you could call me a frog. Anywho, i don't often have the mental capacity to run hard for miles and miles at a time. intervals are just easier for me to handle mentally. i don't know why i can run hard for so long on land but not in the water but that's the truth...so, i run intervals. they were at tempo not sprinting pace today.

few more easy miles (outside! it's chilly!)

easy miles. achilles feels good (not all on land, but some). i have a cold rash from either running outside today or walking the dog this morning (it was 6 degrees. i only went about 3 blocks. i hadn't known it was that cold.)

Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance

ran in the pool by my parents' house. blah. so warm...but that's better than running in blizzard-like winds. there was water aerobics going on while i was running. cute old ladies. and a few old men slowly swim laps and do pull ups off the diving platforms in the deep end (mostly in water so they're easier). they're all so cute and happy in the mornings.

i was actually able to focus well enough to run a decent pace for a long time (no intervals!). i'll do my land running later, but probably in the gym. i got a cold-burn yesterday in logan.

Well, i was gonna be a wuss but the wind subsided enough and i ran outside (layered as could be). wasn't that bad. especially running with the wind; against it, my eyelashes sprouted white, clumpy mascara.

Are you not in Logan this weekend? Where do your parents live?

From lisap on Fri, Dec 19, 2008 at 12:48:33

yeah, i left Logan yesterday. my parents live in South Jordan. Yee Hawwww for the suburbs!

From Jon on Fri, Dec 19, 2008 at 12:53:58

Well, enjoy your time down there and have a Merry Christmas.

i meant to run twice as much today. but THERE WAS POWDER!!! I skied all morning and ran errands whilst digesting my lunch then cranked out about 6 at a pace that surprised me. then i went to the gym for more but only managed a couple by the time i decided i was too tired to care any more.

sweet powder today (for the amount of snow Alta got). up to my knees in most areas where i skied and some spots past my knees. i had one interesting run...we skied in the trees most of the day because viibility was low and the powder there wasn't carved up.  and...the pillow of powder i was going to take was a small tree. i endo-ed. good thing my landing was soft.

I take it you were or are down here in SLC? Nice run snow bunny!

From lisap on Mon, Dec 22, 2008 at 13:00:39

so, i just checked out your blog for the first time. you're in south jordan? i'm in so jo.(that's where i grew up) where do you run down here? generally i hit up the canal roads (yes, even in the snow, but i don't really recommend that).

From Jon on Mon, Dec 22, 2008 at 13:30:52

Oh no, I can just picture you two meeting and running together. Way too much hilarity will ensue. Stop the MADNESS!

From walter on Mon, Dec 22, 2008 at 14:10:44

Jon Im actually coming up there on Wednesday. So Ill have to do a run if you all are in town! Ill give you something to remember. (that didnt sound good)

From walter on Mon, Dec 22, 2008 at 14:13:23

Lisa, Im east of Bangerter and 106th south. I usually run around daybreak and the parktrail. They have 106th ripped up right now which was my route of running so now I have to go to 114th to do anything, but I usually just drive up to daybreak or down to the parktrail. How long are you in So jo?

From lisap on Mon, Dec 22, 2008 at 14:25:47

i'm in town until sunday (i'm going to mexico!).

yeah, 104th so. sucks. i forgot about it and was running on it this morning in the snow. not the best idea i've ever had. i live off 104th s and 10th west, so quite a bit east of you, but still in the area.

From walter on Mon, Dec 22, 2008 at 14:34:07

Do you know Danielle Winegar, now Curtis? Thats my running buddy! She lives on the north side of 104th and the east side of 10th west. If I knew you were running this morning, I would have had someone to push me! lol

Admittedly they weren't the hardest of hard miles but i was pooped (note to self. eat more protein than i did yesterday. or just eat more than i did yesterday...) got up the morning and ran in the pool, dodging old ladies who were willy-nilly with their water aerobics today because their instructor's garage door wouldn't open. they're so cute. i was then going to run from the gym but had left my contacts at home (purposely run without them when in the pool 'cause then i can't see time slow to a near stand-still).

by the time i slapped my contacts in and threw on my dad's old yellow hoodie, it was snowing. i followed my little sis out (she was a good mile or more out by the time i left). we were the only two nutty enough to run on the canal road. just her tracks and mine for a while at least. this made the running a little sloggish and tough, battling the wind (burrrrrrr!) and the few inches of snow (worse in the drifts). we were smart though, against the wind first and then with the wind for most of the rest of the run (except that the wind changed directions just a little and the snow bit my face for a few miles). but, it was a nice run. i actually like running in the snow.

Hey, I had a similar run today! Im sure its good for the legs but it was hard. I ran with Danielle this morning and you guys are the same age!? It is a small world! Im actually heading up to Logan tonight for the rest of the week. The old switcharoo with you! lol

7 more alone tonight. one of the life guards recognized me from logan.

they were medium-ish (still too easy). i was going to ski today so i got up early to run before hand but then i decided it wasn't worth the money to ski for just 3 hours (too much to do today).

anywho, so i was at the gym running in the pool while the high schoolers had swim practice. i've never been so wet running.  (i think. maybe in a good rain storm)

I love running but I am now about to enter into more rest than I've had (in terms of rest from running) in a very long time. It's time to play.

Going skiing (downhill) and then to a cabin (5 miel x country ski in) tomorrow. hope to find time to run tomorrow and sat night after returning from the cabin. Then i'm going to mexico. Driving to Mexico. I hope to be able to squeeze a few miles in with all the fun i'm going to be having.
