Recent races: St. George Marathon, Olympic Trials Marathon, Moab 5 miler.

Short-Term Running Goals:

I want to run faster. I'd like to win a race or two. I want to smarter and harder and increase my mileage without increasing my injuries.

I'd also like to keep up with this and my other blog. You can check it out at novicexpert.blogspot.com. I don't keep track of my workouts there (just random thoughts on running), so the two don't really interfere.

Long-Term Running Goals:

I want to win at least one marathon, make a better showing at the next Olympic Trials, try a few ultra-marathons and finish a 100-miler.

Personal:

I lead a simple life. I teach a couple of times a week and run. A lot. I also climb and ski (both snow and water) whenever I get a chance.  I think I'm addicted to sunshine.

I did my ladder intervals in the pool this morning. So...no it's not the same as road running but sometimes my body just needs a break from the pounding. I like to run intervals in the pool because I can actually concentrate on running hard for the shorter times (that and it passes the time faster. I tell you what if the US government really wanted to torture people...) Anywho, twas a good run. One of the ROTC programs came in and seemed like they were going to do lots of drills. They had fake guns they had to try to keep dry and everything, but they didn't even stick around for half my workout (and the well...i don't know what kind of leader he was but the guy in charge was talking most of the time). I enjoyed the workout.

I'll probably get out for a few more miles this afternoon.

Ran again this afternoon (6 miles medium--comfortable but not completely slacking pace). I didn't mean to run that far, to put that many miles in today, but I just couldn't help it.  Seems pointless to run just a couple of miles at a time when I'm striving for a couple of hours of running each day. Mostly, though, I just enjoyed my little jaunt around the Island. Ran over to that park/nature preserve (or whatnot) on 1st south and about 7th east. Hadn't been there in a while. It was a useful run for stretching my legs out a bit so I can run tempo tomorrow.

Was it a pool treadmill or with a bouyant belt?

From Cheryl on Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 13:52:36

Yes, could you describe the workout in more detail? I like to do pool running and am looking for ways to make it more effective. How long are the intervals/rests? How long was the workout all together? Thanks for the info!

Bouyant belt. I've never run in a pool treadmill.

I agree that it's hard to get a good workout in a pool lap lane (too many turns). The pool I ran in today is different in that I run laps around the "dive tank"--a square deeper end adjacent to part of the lap pool (not as long as the lap pool). So I do the intervals based on the time it takes me to run a lap.

I've been told that running in the pool gives your the closest workout to actual running--as far as cross-training goes (i.e. closer than biking or swimming obviously, since you're using the same muscles in the same manner). I've also been told it's a 1:1 ratio in terms of time and effort. So, 7 min of pool running at a 7 min/mile effort equals a mile (or thereabouts).

Back to my workout. I ran 1 lap, 1.5, 2, 3, 4,4,3,2,1.5,1. So the intervals range from about a half mile (maybe a little less) to roughly 1.5, depending on how hard I run.

In regular lap pools where I am running back and forth instead of laps, I tend to figure out the equivalent. So...3 times down and back equals a half mile or whatever (I have no idea, actually)...then I make an interval session based on the distance and time. Kind of vague (sorry) but it works for me.

Thanks for that info. I just wanted to clarify one thing--are you always at the deep end of the pool where your feet do not touch the bottom? I'm asking because at the pool where I go the lap lane is only about four feet deep, so you would run it just like regular running, only with the water resistance. So do you do deep water running exclusively or do you sometimes run in shallower water?

deep water exclusively. can be tricky to find the right pool sometimes.

Thanks again for all the information. That was very helpful.

Cody and I have both done deep water running. Intervals are the only way to go- it's too hard to maintain high effort, otherwise.
